Live Brief with Kate Usher

For the final module of 1st yr FdA Textiles & Surface Design, at Newcastle College, I asked my students to create a collection of 3 or more co-ordinating wallpapers, around a chosen mood or theme, as part of a LIVE brief set by Kate Usher.

Kate Usher studio is more famous for its quirky and fun, hand drawn, painted or sketched children’s wall coverings. The students were given two options to choose from:

Option one: Design a collection of quirky and inspirational child’s wall coverings for either junior or nursery.

Option two: Design a collection of upmarket commercial contract wall coverings for the boutique hotel market.

A cash prize of £100, including a 40 hour work placement was awarded to the student with the winning collection.

This is a small great designs produced...

The Textile Society - Manchester Antique Textile Fair

Yesterday, I travelled to Manchester with friend Mandy Pattullo to rummage for vintage textiles, trims & curio at the annual Textile Society Antique Textiles Fair. Mandy and I have attended this event for years now, as soon as we enter the fair we don't see each other for dust, but towards the end, walk around together for one last look...incase we've missed anything of interest.

On this occasion there were more French dealers selling their finds, and one lovely stall selling old circus costumes for children, unfortunately I forgot my camera, but this is what I was drawn to and purchased to use in my own work....

Vintage Fashion Talk

Judith Liddell, one of the stall holders from our November fair will be talking about vintage fashion and accessories at St George's Church Hall Jesmond Saturday 10th March 2pm. £5 on the door which includes refreshments. You are encouraged to come dressed in a vintage outfit or bring your items for display and discussion.

Vintage Floral Needlepoint Tapestry Chair

I purchased this chair from one of my favourite local haunts, which specialises in furniture restoration and recycling called Refunk your Junk, based in the Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle Upon Tyne. As soon as I spied the chair....it was love at first sight and I just had to have it!
